Community Meeting in Gaza: Leaders Back Shared Assets for Spouses – CWLRCP Initiative

The Center for Women’s Legal Researches, Counselling and Protection (CWLRCP) conducted a community meeting in the Gaza Strip, bringing together community leaders and local representatives to discuss a system of shared marital property. This initiative is part of a campaign implemented by the CWLRCP, funded by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, which aims to empower married women to equally share in movable and immovable assets acquired during the marriage.

Lawyer Islah Hassanieh, a board member of the CWLRCP, emphasized that the campaign seeks to exert pressure on decision-makers to establish a system of shared marital property acquired after marriage. This system would automatically guarantee a wife’s right to a share of assets acquired during the marriage. She stated that achieving this goal requires contributing to raising community awareness, particularly among young people.

Hassanieh indicated that this campaign was launched due to the increasing phenomenon of economic violence in the Gaza Strip, especially after the 2014 war, including violations of women’s financial rights related to real estate and movable assets to which they contributed through income from work or inheritance. This leads to increased family disputes between spouses, ultimately resulting in divorce.

At the end of the meeting, community leaders and local representatives recommended working to pressure for the establishment of a system of shared marital property, given the suffering of women from violations of their acquired rights in property acquired after marriage, especially considering that they are employed and have contributed to the acquisition of this property.
