CWLRCP Continues Campaign on Marital Property Rights

The Center for Women’s Legal Researches, Counselling and Protection (CWLRCP) held a community meeting that included a number of lawyers to discuss the joint property law between spouses. This meeting was part of a campaign implemented by the Center with funding from the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Through this campaign, the Center aims to empower married women to exercise their right to equally divide movable and immovable property acquired during the marriage.

Ms. Zeinab Al-Ghunaimi, Director of the Center, emphasized that the campaign aims to exert pressure on decision-makers to establish a joint property system acquired after marriage. This system would automatically guarantee the wife’s right to share the property after marriage. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to contribute to raising societal awareness, especially among young people. She called on the attendees to sign the petition and declare their position in favor of approving this system, which guarantees women’s rights to own family property equally with men. To achieve this goal, (20) workshops will be conducted through a number of lawyers capable of carrying out a legal and community awareness campaign on women’s right to property. She pointed out that this campaign came about due to the expansion of the phenomenon of economic violence in the Gaza Strip, especially after the 2014 war, which included attacks on women’s financial rights, including real estate and movable property that they had contributed to from work income or inheritance shares. This leads to widening family disputes between spouses, which ultimately leads to divorce. At the end of the meeting, the lawyers recommended the need to work to pressure for the establishment of a joint property system between spouses, due to the suffering of women from attacks on their acquired rights in property that is acquired after marriage, given that they are working and participated in achieving this property.
