The Center for Women’s Legal Researches, Counselling and Protection (CWLRCP) concluded a training course entitled “Empowering Duty Bearers in the Legislative Council to Protect the Rights of Abused Women.” The course targeted a number of committee directors and rapporteurs in the Legislative Council. This training is part of the activities of the project “Improving Justice Sector Services for Women in the Gaza Strip,” which is implemented by the Center to support the development of the technical capacities of official actors on the basis of human rights, and to improve women’s access to justice and protection services.
It is noted that the training targeted (13) committee directors and rapporteurs in the Legislative Council, including (2) women and (11) men, over (5) training days, totaling (25) hours, from February 6-10, 2022. The topics revolved around:
(Gender-based violence and referral pathways in the national referral system for shelters, and the Hayat Center system for the Protection and Empowerment of Women and Families; the role of legislation in protecting women’s rights: women’s rights in current Palestinian laws and legislation – amendment and modification of laws to protect women’s rights, using the draft law on family protection from violence as a model; amendments to the Personal Status Law (divorce, raising the age of custody, raising the age of marriage…etc.); harmonizing legislation with international conventions signed by the State; protecting rights and freedoms (civil and political rights) in accordance with the Basic Palestinian Law, and sustainable development goals; strengthening the oversight role of the Legislative Council committees to protect women from domestic violence).
